Leukemia Treatment in Delhi NCR
Compassionate, Child-Focused Care for Leukemia and Other Pediatric Blood Cancers
What Is Leukemia in Children?
Leukemia in children is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It occurs when abnormal white blood cells grow uncontrollably and crowd out healthy blood-forming cells.
The bone marrow is the soft tissue inside bones that produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In leukemia, abnormal cells grow rapidly and interfere with the production of healthy blood cells.
This can lead to anemia, reduced immunity, increased risk of infections, easy bruising, bleeding, fatigue and weakness.
Although leukemia is a serious condition, advances in pediatric cancer treatment have improved survival rates.
Risk Factors for Leukemia in Children
Most children with leukemia do not have an identifiable cause. However, certain genetic conditions, bone marrow disorders, and previous medical exposures may increase the risk in some cases.
Family History of Blood Disorders
A family history of certain blood disorders may be associated with increased risk.
Previous Radiation Exposure
Exposure to high doses of radiation may affect blood-forming cells.
Previous Cancer Treatment
Certain chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy can increase future leukemia risk.
Rare Bone Marrow Disorders
Some inherited bone marrow conditions may increase the likelihood of leukemia.
Immune System Disorders
Some immune deficiencies may be associated with a higher risk of blood cancers.
Genetic Syndromes
Conditions such as Down syndrome may be associated with an increased risk of childhood leukemia.
Symptoms of Leukemia in Children
While these symptoms do not always indicate leukemia, persistent or unexplained symptoms should be evaluated by an expert pediatric hemato-oncology specialist.
Persistent Fever
Frequent or unexplained fever that continues despite treatment may be an early warning sign.
Frequent Infections
Children with leukemia may develop repeated infections because abnormal blood cells affect the body's immune defenses.
Easy Bruising
Bruises may develop more easily than usual, even after minor bumps or injuries.
Bleeding Gums
Reduced platelet counts can lead to frequent nosebleeds or bleeding from the gums.
Bone & Joint Pain
Leukemia cells can accumulate in the bone marrow, causing discomfort in the bones or joints.
Fatigue & Weakness
A child may appear unusually tired, less active, or easily exhausted due to reduced healthy blood cell production.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Painless swelling in the neck, underarms, or groin may occur when abnormal cells collect in lymph nodes.
Pale Skin
Low red blood cell levels (anemia) can make the skin appear pale and cause a lack of energy.
